The Basics of Each Application Method
Granular fertilizers are dry, pellet-form products applied with a broadcast spreader. They break down over time as moisture activates them, releasing nutrients gradually. Liquid fertilizers are dissolved or suspended in water and applied with a sprayer, delivering nutrients directly to the soil or foliage where they're immediately available. Both methods deliver the same fundamental nutrients, the difference is in delivery mechanism, timing of availability, and practical application considerations.
When Liquid Has an Advantage
Liquid fertilizer delivers nutrients quickly and can be blended with other products, such as herbicides, iron supplements, or biostimulants, in a single pass. For correcting a specific deficiency fast, liquid is the more responsive option. Liquid applications also allow for precise rate control and even coverage without the risk of uneven granule distribution from a spreader. Some professionals prefer liquid for mid-season correction treatments and iron applications.
When Granular Has an Advantage
High-quality granular fertilizers with slow-release nitrogen technology deliver nutrients over a six to twelve week period, reducing the risk of nitrogen burn and ensuring continuous feeding with fewer applications. Slow-release granulars are the standard choice for main-season fertilization programs on tall fescue because they mimic the grass's natural nutrient uptake rhythm. They're also more forgiving of application error, a slightly uneven pass with a granular slow-release product is less likely to cause problems than the same error with a high-nitrogen liquid.
